The Honourable Anna Bligh

NEW COUNCIL SPEARHEADS QUEENSLAND'S DESIGNS ON FUTURE HUB

Premier and Arts Minister Anna Bligh today positioned Queensland as a leading design economy, announcing a new Queensland Design Council and two international opportunities for the state's designers to showcase in Shanghai and Venice in 2010.

"Queensland is a leader in design, embracing the idea of design-led thinking and the value of the design industry to the economy and our future," Ms Bligh said.

"This is the first time such a broad team of experts has been brought together to drive a design agenda.

"The Queensland Design Council bolsters our ambition to be a design hub for the Asia Pacific region and will advise the Queensland Government on design led solutions to 21st century social, economic and environmental challenges.

"This advice will align with our Toward Q2 ambitions for a strong, green, smart, healthy and fair Queensland."

Ms Bligh welcomed Design Council members: Dr Julianne Schultz AM, author founding editor of Griffith REVIEW (chair); Michael Rayner, Principal, Cox Rayner Architects; Yassmin Abdel-Magied, President, Youth Without Borders; Mara Bun, Chief Executive Office, Green Cross Australia; Dr Dawn Casey, Director, Powerhouse Museum; Sean Cummins, former CEO of CumminsNitro advertising agency; Alexander Loterstztain, designer; Richard Munao, Managing Director, Corporate Culture; Chris Rodwell, Queensland Director, Australian Industry Group; and Professor Suzi Vaughan, Portfolio Director of Fashion, Creative Industries Faculty, Queensland University of Technology.

The Queensland Design Council is a key initiative of the Queensland Design Strategy 2020. Other initiatives include the Design Triennial, a major event for the Asia Pacific region, to be held 4-10 October 2010 in Brisbane and the Queensland Premier's Design Awards.

"There are also two international opportunities to promote our design industry such as 2010 Shanghai World Expo where the Queensland Government's HEAT initiative will showcase our architects to leading international business people," said Ms Bligh.

"The Queensland Government will provide $60,000 to the Australian Pavilion at the 2010 Venice Architecture Biennale in October, with Surfers Paradise one of the areas of focus for the NOW + WHEN Australian Urbanism exhibition in the Pavilion."
