New Tiger Airways services welcome news for Brisbane

The launch of new Tiger Airways' Melbourne - Brisbane services from next March is great news for Brisbane, Tourism Minister Peter Lawlor said today.

Mr Lawlor welcomed Tiger Airways' announcement that from March 28, 2010 it would offer up to three daily flights on the popular route.

"This increased competition on the Melbourne - Brisbane route will be great for both business and leisure travellers and will make access into south-east Queensland easier and more cost-effective for Victorians," Mr Lawlor said.

"Tiger Airway's announcement will also open Brisbane up to a new generation of Victorian leisure travellers as, with flights starting from just $88 one-way, Brisbane is perfectly placed to become an ideal short-break destination.

"Other parts of south-east Queensland will also benefit as it will be a simple matter to pick up a hire car at the airport and drive to any number of destinations in just an hour or two."

Mr Lawlor said the new services would add up to 3,780 weekly seats in capacity to Brisbane from Melbourne.

He said 325,000 Melburnians spent 1.3 million nights in Brisbane in the year ending June 2009.

"These new flights will start just in time for the peak Easter holiday period so the timing couldn't be better," he said.
