Newman jobs pledge 'dead' inside two days

Campbell Newman has spectacularly backflipped on his jobs stunt from Tuesday, revising his target to match Queensland Treasury's projections that have already been published.

Treasurer Andrew Fraser said Mr Newman's implosion in front of the media was more evidence of his penchant for stunts over substance.

"Campbell Newman's so-called jobs target is dead in the water because it was nothing more than a stunt in the first place," Mr Fraser said.

"He ran away from the media on Tuesday and today he's run away from his target.

"He told the media he had modelling that backed up his claims, and it turns out that was simply untrue.

"Today he's backed down, declaring a 'new' target that matches what Treasury predicts will already happen.

"You simply can't believe any of the stunts Campbell Newman pulls."

Mr Fraser said Mr Newman's backdown came on the same day that December's ABS figures showed Queensland has created jobs for the last nine months straight.

"The Bligh Government went to the last election promising to create jobs and we have never wavered from that commitment," Mr Fraser said.

"In December, another 1,100 jobs were created - more than any other state that month. There was actually 1,800 full-time jobs created - a decline in part-time jobs pulled back the net number for the month.

"Queensland and WA were the only mainland states in December to record jobs growth.

"Over the year to December, Queensland created 16,400 jobs - more than any other state in the country."

Mr Fraser said the jobs target now stood at 10,500, after the ABS revised their own data for previous months.

"We know that with the global economic turmoil, reaching this target will be tough, but we are steadfastly committed to reaching that target.

"Campbell Newman has already backed down from his target inside two and a half days.

"If Campbell Newman says it, you know it's nothing more than a stunt."
