Nominations now open for Queenslanders making reconciliation their business
Premier Anna Bligh has launched the 2012 Queensland
Reconciliation Awards encouraging Queensland businesses,
community organisations and educational institutions to
nominate.
"Now in its tenth year, this awards program continues to
recognise Queenslanders who are working in partnership with
Indigenous and non-Indigenous people on important reconciliation
projects and initiatives across the state," Ms Bligh said.
"I look forward to hearing about the remarkable achievements that
Queenslanders have made towards reconciliation in our
community."
In 2011, a diverse range of reconciliation projects were
acknowledged:
- Cherbourg Historical Precinct Group Inc for The Ration Shed, a community not-for-profit venture that offers tours and educational programs for schools, institutions and visitors
- Virgin Australia for its Indigenous Employment Strategy promoting broad opportunities available in the aviation industry, as well as creating cultural awareness across the airline and the community
- Napranum Parents and Learning (PaL) Group for supporting families to engage in their children's education and the development of their early literacy and numeracy skills
- Kirwan State High School for its strong commitment to reconciliation through the embedding of intercultural perspectives in all aspects of school life
- MurriWatch and Australians for Native Title and Reconciliation Queensland (ANTaR Qld) and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Women's Legal and Advocacy Service (ATSIWLAS) for Project 10%, a campaign to reduce Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander imprisonment by 10 per cent each year for 10 years.
The awards program offers a total prize pool of $25,000 across five categories: Business, Education, Community Organisation, Partnerships and an overall Premier's Reconciliation Awar

Award winners will be announced at a ceremony during
Reconciliation Week in May 2012.
The Queensland Reconciliation Awards is an initiative of the
Queensland Government (through the Department of the Premier and
Cabinet, Department of Communities and the Department of
Employment, Economic Development and Innovation) and is supported
by Indigenous Business Corporation, Leighton Contractors,
National Indigenous Times, 612 ABC Brisbane and ABC Local
Radio.
The awards program is an important part of the Queensland
Government's commitment to the Reconciliation Action Plan
2009-2012.
