Noosa playwright wins Nancy Cato award

For the first time ever, the coveted Nancy Cato Audience Choice award in the National Playwriting Competition held at Noosa Arts theatre went to a play by a Noosa writer, former journalist Frank Wilkie.

The audience voted Wilkie's one-act comedy "Tudo ou Nada", Portuguese for "All or Nothing", as their favourite play over the two-week run of the 2010 festival, which attracted 55 entries from across Australia.

Internationally-acclaimed author and Noosa environmental activist Nancy Cato co-founded the playwriting competition at Noosa Arts Theatre in 1978. Her daughter Bronnie Norman presented the award and Gail Denver from Maverick Musicals and plays provided a publishing contract for the work.

Noosa actors in Tudo ou Nada, Shane Cassidy and Synda Turnbull, were awarded the Best Actor and Adjudicator's Award respectively at the Festival which has already attracted entries from international writers for the 2011 event.

Tudo ou Nada, another Wilkie comedy "Good Grief" and the chilling drama by Buderim playwright Bruce Olive "God Willing", the winner of the Noosa Arts Playwriting Award, will be showcased as part of the Noosa Longweekend at Noosa Arts theatre this Saturday, June 26.
