North gears up for Cyclone Ului
Main Roads Minister Craig Wallace is closely monitoring weather bureau forecasts in Townsville as the northern region battens down in readiness for Cyclone Ului.
Minister Wallace said his Department's Emergency Management staff and regional offices in the cyclone warning area were well prepared and ready to swing into action.
"Engineers and road crews are on standby in the region and ready to swiftly respond to whatever nature throws at the road network," Mr Wallace said.
"We've got emergency plans in place. We have contingencies for reserve fuel supplies, gravel and premix, traffic operations, generators and machinery ready to roll out across the region," he said.
Mr Wallace said today that damage to the state's road network from the recent floods had hit the $250 million mark.
"It was a once in a century flood and it had a big impact on the road network, particularly in the south west," he said.
"The good news is that many of the flood-damaged highways out west have been re-opened to traffic.
"We had road crews working around the clock to make the roads safe for road users and I take my hat off to them," he said.
"Road crews in the cyclone warning area are bracing themselves for more damage to the network if Cyclone Ului causes havoc in the region," he said.
Mr Wallace said that in the event of a cyclone or heavy flooding, residents and motorists should seek updates from emergency information services.
"Safety comes first. If people need to travel, it's important they know the condition of the roads.
"The 13 19 40 phone service will be updated regularly with information on road closures," he said.
"Main Roads will closely monitor the road network. They're ready to swing into action to carry out urgent repairs," he said.
