Oil Slick Causes Algal Bloom In Maroochy River
15 March 2009 Oil Slick Causes Algal Bloom In Maroochy River
This morning on Maroochy Waterwatch's river inspection we have noticed large red algae outbreaks in the Maroochy River where one oil slick entered mangroves near Twin Waters.
The algae outbreak is most likely a direct cause of the oil spill. It wasn't there on Friday when we inspected the site. A dead puffer fish has been found where the algae is.
Could be more fish kills if the algae increases as it depletes the water of oxygen.
The mangroves have not been cleaned of the oil.
Crabs in the mangroves are eating the oil. We won't know how many crab deaths we expect to find as they will most likely die in their holes.
Still oil slicks floating around on the river.
