opposition must not play politics with sw floods or flood appeal
Premier Anna Bligh has called on Deputy Opposition leader Tim
Nicholls not to play politics with the South West Queensland
floods. The Premier's comments come after Mr Nicholls called a
press conference today to claim that use the word Premier in the
titled of the relief appeal 'politicised' it.
"The people whose homes are underwater for the third time in two
years don't care what the appeal is called," said the Premier.
"To try and discredit this fund just moments after it opened is
heartless and it could have serious consequences. It's
irresponsible.
"These Queenslanders need our help. Just as they have to rally
their strength once again we must rally to help those in need.
They are not interested in political bickering. "I have a job to
do and I intend to get on and do it. This is not a game. People's
lives are being upended again. It's almost too much to bear and
my message to the opposition is to back off and back this fund.
"Every dollar will be directed toward helping Queenslanders in
need. That's the bottom line"
Premier Bligh said the generic Premier's Disaster Relief Appeal
was created to provide a faster and more efficient administrative
response to a direction to establish a public appeal to provide
relief from natural disasters. "The generic appeal fund has been
used ever since and the Premier's Disaster Relief Appeal is the
legal name of the trust which was established in March 2000," she
said.
"The name would be the same no matter who is Premier. It is not
political and I assume the title is used to flag the official
nature of the fund which receives international donations and
donations from interstate. "It is a bit rich for an opposition
who sent the unelected candidate for Ashgrove to Roma to try and
capitalise on this disaster to make these claims."
