Outstanding Suncorp Queenslanders of the Year revealed
Premier Anna Bligh has congratulated Dimity Dornan AM, Managing Director/Founder of the Hear and Say Centre, and 19 year-old Yassmin Abdel-Magied, Founder of Youth Without Borders who were named 2010 Suncorp Queenslander of the Year and 2010 Young Suncorp Queenslander of the Year respectively.
Dr James Morton, Founder of the AEIOU Foundation was also awarded the 2010 Suncorp Community Spirit Award for his contribution to the local community.
"These awards recognise Queenslanders who have made a significant contribution to local communities and our state," Ms Bligh said.
"It is an honour to personally congratulate the winners and finalists - the state's top citizens for 2010 - during Queensland Week, a time when we celebrate just how proud we are to be Queenslanders.
"I'm sure that all Queenslanders would agree that their commitment to excellence is an inspiration for us all," Ms Bligh said.
Suncorp Chairman John Story said the Queenslanders of the Year Awards have been proudly supported by Suncorp since 1989.
"On behalf of Suncorp, I would like to congratulate all of this year's winners," Mr Story said.
"Their tireless efforts helping charities and community organisations or to make advancements in fields such as science, sport, business and education truly deserve the recognition that the Queenslander of the Year awards bring."

2010 Suncorp Queenslander of the Year - Dimity Dornan
Ms Dornan, a speech pathologist, founded the Hear and Say Centre in 1990. She has dedicated her life to changing the lives of deaf children, overcoming traditional and entrenched beliefs that deaf children could not learn to hear, listen and speak well enough to be clearly understood.
2010 Young Suncorp Queenslander of the Year - Yassmin Abdel-Magied
At the age of 17, with a passion for social issues, Ms Abdel-Magied founded Youth Without Borders, an advocacy group that strives to empower youth to work together to implement positive change within their communities in Australia and overseas.
2010 Suncorp Community Spirit Award - Dr James Morton
Dr Morton is a Medical Director of Haematology-Oncology Clinics of Australasia and a passionate advocate for children with autism. After Dr Morton's second child was diagnosed with autism he and his wife, Louise, sought out the best treatments to help their child speak, manage his anxieties and engage with other people. When they couldn't find these treatments anywhere in Australia they rallied their friends together and set up the AEIOU Foundation, a fulltime early intervention program for children diagnosed with autism.
The Suncorp Queenslander of the Year finalists included: Peter O'Reilly OAM, Company Director, O'Reilly's Rainforest Retreat; Bronwyn Sheehan, Founder, The Pyjama Foundation; and Sam Sheppard, Director, The Buildmore Group.
The Suncorp Young Queenslander of the Year finalists included: Stephanie Gilmore, world surfing champion; Katelin Haynes, science champion from The University of Queensland; and Alissa Phillips, Executive Director, s.p.a.c.e.
