Premier Condemns 'Unaustralian' Attack On Rocky MPS
Premier Anna Bligh has expressed concern and condemnation after
an apparently politically motivated attack on two Labor
politicians yesterday.
Police have charged a 62 year old Rockhampton man with three
counts of willful damage following a number of 'ram raiding'
style incidents yesterday.
At around 6pm a car was reversed into the garage door of
Rockhampton MP Robert Schwarten's home destroying the door and
damaging the family car.
Police believe the incident was linked to a similar attack on the
office of Federal Capricornia Member Kirsten Livermore earlier
that day.
"Thankfully no-one was hurt but I was shocked today when I heard
these reports," said the Premier.
"I have spoken to Robert this morning and both he and his family
are understandably shaken up by these distressing events.
"In fact he tells me that it is just by pure luck that no one was
in the garage at that time.
"I would like to thank the police for their swift action
following what happened.
"In this country we expressed our political differences at the
ballot box. There is no place for violence and intimidation in
our democracy.
"Today is Australia day. A day to remember just how precious our
democracy is.
"I call on all politicians, no matter what side of politics they
belong to, to condemn what happened in Rockhampton
yesterday."
