Premier donates $100,000 to launch Smith Family Christmas Appeal
Queensland Premier Anna Bligh has kicked off The Smith Family's
annual Christmas appeal with a $100,000 donation.
At the Appeal's launch today, the Premier urged Queenslanders to
keep alive Queensland's spirit of giving this Christmas and
donate to the Appeal.
"Christmas is a special time of year for families and an exciting
time for children of all ages," the Premier said.
"But it's also a time to remember that one in ten children across
Australia are experiencing disadvantage and do not have access to
the same educational, health and life opportunities as their
peers.
"The Smith Family, through their learning support programs, is
helping young people all over Australia throughout their
education.
"These programs give children the confidence and resources they
need, from school books and money for school trips, to learning
support so they can keep up at school and not be at risk of
exclusion.
Ms Bligh said The Smith Family currently supported more than
7,000 Queensland children across 22 communities.
"We know that a good education is the key to giving our children
the best start in life.
"That's why we introduced the Prep year and why we are moving
year seven into high school.
"And it's why programs like those run by The Smith Family are so
important.
The Premier said she was also pleased to announce renewed funding
of $1.58 million over three years for The Smith Family's Reading
for Children program.
"The program focuses on early childhood literacy by providing
access to early language and literacy activities for
pre-schoolers.
"By supporting The Smith Family Christmas Appeal you can help
children get the support and learning opportunities they need to
create a better future for themselves.
"I would urge Queenslanders to remember the true spirit of
Christmas this year and dig deep to help children in need," the
Premier said.
