Premier launches Disaster Relief Appeal for Flood Affected Communities in South-West Queensland
Premier Anna Bligh has today launched an appeal to help those affected by flooding in the state's south-west with a $500,000 contribution from the State Government.
Ms Bligh said the appeal would focus particularly on the Murweh, Maranoa and Balonne Shires where a disaster situation has been declared.
"I've seen first hand the devastation the flooding over the past week has brought to these communities and it's going to take some time before the residents of towns like Charleville and Roma are back on their feet," Ms Bligh said.
"Hundreds of families in south-western Queensland, particularly in Charleville and Roma, have been hard hit by widespread flooding.
"Queenslanders have always rallied to help those in need and I am certain they will do so on this occasion.
"I invite all Queenslanders to dig deep and give whatever they can to the Premier's Disaster Relief Appeal to help those in need.
"No donation - whether it be $2 or $20 is too small and every dollar will go directly toward helping the victims of these devastating floods."
Donations can be made in person at any of the big banks including the Commonwealth Bank of Australia, Bank of Queensland, NAB, Westpac, ANZ and Suncorp.
Cheques can be made out to the Premiers' Disaster Relief Appeal.
Donors can contact the Queensland Government 24 hours a day on freecall 1800 173 349 with their credit card details.
Donations can also be made on the Queensland Government website, www.qld.gov.au
All donations of $2.00 or more to the appeal will be tax deductable.
"We are all saddened by the devastation, suffering and hardship caused throughout flood affected South-West Queensland and the appeal is a tangible way of giving much-needed assistance," Ms Bligh said.
"Any assistance we can provide is important.
"Disaster relief funding arrangements have been activated for people experiencing personal hardship in the Murweh and Maranoa Local Government area, including the towns of Charleville and Roma.
"People living in these areas may be eligible for immediate assistance of $170 per person or $780 per family," Ms Bligh said.
For further information contact The Department of Communities on 1800 173 349.
"The disaster situation in Western Queensland is being constantly monitored as the circumstances are changing rapidly.
"Further personal hardship arrangements will be automatically triggered as needed in affected areas," she said.
Meantime, the government has also today convened the first meeting of the State's Government's Floods Reconstruction Taskforce.
Chair of Queensland Building Services Authority John Gaskin will head the taskforce which includes the Building Services Authority, the Housing Industry Association, Master Builders, the Insurance Council of Australia and all of the major insurers and the State Government.
"This is about getting everybody on the same page to ensure the rebuilding effort takes place in a co-ordinated manner and as swiftly as possible," Ms Bligh said.
