Preparations well in hand for Cyclone Ului

Emergency Services Minister Neil Roberts said Emergency Management Queensland and State Emergency Services are well prepared for the possible effects of Cyclone Ului.

Mr Roberts said a Cyclone Watch was issued by the Bureau of Meteorology at 11am today for coastal regions from Cardwell to Yeppoon.

"This Cyclone Watch is still for a large area of the Queensland coast, because of the unpredictable nature of this type of weather event," Mr Roberts said.

"The important issue is for people within this watch area to be cyclone prepared and alert to the changing conditions.

"All coastal District Disaster Management Groups (DDMG) and Local Disaster Management Groups (LDMG) have been activated and are closely monitoring the event.

"I have spoken to local Mayors in the region today and commend them and their disaster management groups on their preparedness."

Mr Roberts said two additional Queensland Fire and Rescue swift water rescue team s have been pre-deployed to North Queensland.

"A further six additional QFRS teams are on standby for deployment, including Urban Search and Rescue and rapid damage assessment teams.

"State Emergency Services personnel across the state have been alerted to possible deployment.

"All equipment caches are fully stocked with sandbags, tarpaulins and chainsaws."

EMQ advises that people should now be finalising their emergency kits and evacuation plans should they be required in the coming days.
