Protect quality agricultural land
Nicklin MP Peter Wellington is calling for district residents to join him in lobbying the government for the long-term protection of our quality farming land.
"The government currently proposes to pass an Act of Parliament to better protect good quality farming land for the future. The Mary Valley has the potential to be the food bowl for Queensland, and rival the Lockyer Valley. Because of the scientifically-established, good-quality agricultural land and its strategic location in south east Queensland, this is an opportunity to protect the Valley's future by having it included in the Government's Strategic Cropping Land proposal," Mr Wellington said.
"This matter was brought to a head as a result of the proposed mining activities which are threatening good farming land on the Darling Downs. The Government's protection proposal will significantly strengthen the current farming policy with a specific Act of Parliament.
"To achieve this, people need to make a submission to the Government by September 30, and respond to the Government's proposed policy. This proposal is available through the government website www.derm.qld.gov.au, or copies are available in my office."
Mr Wellington said, while the Federal Government has stopped the Traveston Dam, this presents a great opportunity for us to piggyback on the State Government's proposal to protect good-quality agricultural land on the Darling Downs, because the same criteria for the Downs fits the Mary Valley and other parts of the Sunshine Coast.
