Public stampede into new look Queensland Museum
The redeveloped Queensland Museum, which opened its doors last
week following a $14.3 million revamp, has been a huge hit with
the public.
Arts Minister Rachel Nolan said early reports show that more than
30,000 people visited the Queensland Museum and Sciencentre over
its three-day opening weekend (20-22 Jan).
Visitors enjoyed the new spaces, experiences and exhibitions
along with the roving puppet dinosaurs on hand for the opening,
prowling and growling through the building.
Entries in the guest book include:
"It was the first time that I visited your museum and I love it!
And the 'living' T-rex was a lot of fun! Can't wait to visit
again."
"Dinosaur display awesome. Great kid value and entertainment.
Everybody loved it and cameras were snapping. Mums, dads &
gramps all enjoyed the interaction. We'll keep coming back. Happy
150."
"The place looks amazing and fun, things to come will just add to
it."
Ms Nolan said new designs for the Discovery Centre, the main
entrance foyer, the ENERGEX Playasaurus Place and the Museum Shop
proved especially popular.
"The opening on 20 January was significant as it was 150 years,
to the day, since the Queensland Museum was established in 1862,"
Ms Nolan said.
"Back when the Queensland Museum began the state of Queensland
was only two years old.
"What a transformation the Queensland Museum and the state have
undergone since then. I encourage all Queenslanders to come
along, share their stories and view some of the state's glorious
wildlife and amazing history on view at the Queensland
Museum."
Ms Nolan said the Queensland Museum's refurbishment was part of
the Bligh Government's commitment to keep the Cultural Centre at
the top of its game.
"More than 3.9 million visits are recorded across the Cultural
Centre annually and so the precinct is not just a cultural hub,
but a key supporter of the local economy and jobs," she
said.
"The Bligh Government has invested heavily in the Cultural Centre
to ensure it continues to draw record crowds and over the past
five years has undertaken a $40 million revamp of QPAC, opened
The Edge, a digital culture centre at the State Library of
Queensland (SLQ), and built the Gallery of Modern Art and
redeveloped SLQ through the $291.3 million Millennium Arts
Project."
