Public transport initiative connects hinterland communities

More than 15 communities from Peachester to Pomona are about to benefit from an innovative public transport service to be trialled by Sunshine Coast Council from next week.

Council's Integrated Transport Systems Portfolio holder, Vivien Griffin, said the Flexilink initiative will involve clearly-marked taxi vehicles travelling on regular, scheduled runs along designated routes where there is an established need for alternative transport options.

"The seven FlexiLink trial routes, funded by council's Public Transport Levy, will connect many of the region's communities with local centres and with links to the wider public transport network,'' Cr Griffin said.

"The services -- all of which will be operational from Tuesday, 4 May -- will provide an affordable, reliable and accessible transport option to help to meet the growing community need. "

The seven Flexilink trial services will cover the following routes:
* Peachester to Beerwah;
* Conondale via Witta to Maleny;
* Glenview Road to Mooloolah Valley;
* Kenilworth to Mapleton;
* Buderim to Mountain Creek;
* Kunda Park to Mons; and
* Cooroy to Pomona.

A single trip is $2 for adults and $1 for children/concession.

A similar service already operates from Boreen Point to Tewantin.

The Flexlink vehicle will travel along the designated route and commuters will be required to meet the vehicle along this route to use the service. These services will operate on a pre-booked basis and will initially run three return trips a day, Monday to Saturday.

"Each Flexilink trial service will operate until the end of the financial year," Cr Griffin said.

"Council will then review the initiative to decide if it can continue beyond that time.

"So, during the trial phase I encourage residents to use the Flexilink Services as often as they can and to tell their friends. By doing so, you may help the new service continue beyond 30 June -- and you will be supporting sustainable living on the Sunshine Coast."

For more information on the Flexlink initiative, route maps and the timetables, contact council's Customer Service Centre on 5475 7272.

Details will be available on council's website by the end of this week: (Visit www.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au and follow the links from the "About the Coast" tab to Transport and Roads). You can also email the project team at flexilink@sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au.

To book a trip on a FlexiLink route, phone 1300 511 163.

Timetables and fact sheets will also be available from council's Customer Service Centres and libraries from next week.

This initiative is funded by council's Public Transport Levy which is raised to improve local public transport services, infrastructure and patronage across the Coast. Council has also received support from the Queensland Government, Suncoast Cabs and Range Taxi Service.

Comments / Have your say

  1. "Flexilink" and "Council Cabs" are new services starting 4th May 2010.

    There's been several things overlooked here.

    The main one being that the TAXI DRIVERS HAVE NOT BEEN CONSULTED/TRAINED on this service.

    As drivers some of us only found out about this last week. We were informed we could only drive these routes once we had finished 'briefing - training sessions'

    It starts today - I believe not one driver has been given this mandatory 'briefing - training session' !

    DOH !

  2. What about NAMBOUR. Yes we have bus services, but what about the elderly that can't walk to the bus services (as it is very hilly in the area). They too require this service to be able to go to the shops.

  3. The service needs to run from Cooroy to COORAN, as the current bus service does.
