Public transport ready for footy fever

TransLink is ready to transport up to 90,000 football fans with three big games of football in Brisbane and on the Gold Coast this weekend.

Rugby league fans will converge on Suncorp Stadium on Friday night to watch the Brisbane Broncos take on the North Queensland Cowboys kicking off the 2010 NRL season.

On Sunday, the Gold Coast Titans will play its first game against the New Zealand Warriors at Skilled Park at Robina and the Queensland Reds will tackle the Western Force at Suncorp Stadium.

Transport Minister Rachel Nolan said commuters should show their pre-paid game day ticket to travel free to and from all three games this weekend.

"Public transport is the easiest, quickest and most cost-effective way for people to travel to and from the games and avoid peak-hour traffic on Friday night," Ms Nolan said.

"On average, more than 90 per cent of Broncos fans use public transport and 80 per cent of Reds fans use public transport to travel to Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane.

"About 90 per cent of Titans fans use public transport to travel to Skilled Park on the Gold Coast.

"QR is scheduling several extra train services for all three games so footy fans should visit the TransLink website www.translink.com.au to the event to plan their journey."
