Queensland councils preparing to give rodeo animals a voice
19 March 2010 Queensland councils preparing to give rodeo animals a voice
Progressive councils across the State are looking to introduce bans against rodeos being held on council land as evidence of cruelty and trauma to event animals becomes public.
Vegan Warriors lobbyist Jaylene Musgrave said the heated debate would contest the issue of cruelty.“If you were to take your dog into the street and chase it on a horse, throw a rope around its neck at high speed and drag it to the ground, then tie its legs up – I can guarantee there would be an outcry and there would charges of animal cruelty,” Ms Musgrave said.“Why is a calf or a steer any less deserving of our care and respect. You only have to spend a second with these animals to know that they feel and they fear.”
Ms Musgrave said a body of evidence existed internationally to support banning rodeos and she commended those councils across Queensland who were prepared to recognise the issue and stand up for animals. “There is no doubt in our minds, the minds of those involved across the RSCPA and of many members of council and the public, that rodeos are cruel to animals,” Ms Musgrave said. “Rodeos might be entrenched but many an entrenched idea has been proven to be cruel, unsavoury and wrong.”Ms Musgrave, who grew up in Kilcoy said it had long been the view of rodeo organizers that lobbyists were simply ‘city folk’ who knew nothing about animals.“This just is not the case,” Ms Musgrave said.
“Rather than knowing nothing about these animals, we would say we are very aware of what is happening to them – many of us have lived and worked with animals all our lives.”Ms Musgrave said rodeo claims of tight regulations and a code of practice did not stand up when cases of cruelty had been prosecuted in Australian courts and the deaths and injuries continued to occur to rodeo animals.“It’s time to move beyond a code of practice and realise that the code is required because there are real issues of cruelty,” Ms Musgrave said.“Calf and steer roping, bulldogging, flank strapping as well as the use of electric prods and spurs are cruel and they result in trauma, injury and death to animals.”
Ms Musgrave said it was time the debate on rodeos focused on the injuries and trauma inflicted on rodeo animals.
“Animals do not have a voice and it is up to those of us who can recognize what is right and wrong to stand up,” Ms Musgrave said.
