Queensland Government supports the Dreaming Festival in 2011

Premier and Arts Minister Anna Bligh today announced funding of $225,000 for the 2011 festival of The Dreaming - Australia's international Indigenous festival at Woodford.

"The Dreaming, which takes place each June, is a showcase of Indigenous artists and performers which is making a name for itself both here and overseas," the Premier said.

"The Queensland Government has supported The Dreaming since its inception in 2005 and this support for the 2011 event will assist the festival to increase its international profile and audience numbers.

"With planning underway for The Dreaming's seventh festival, we can expect an ever-increasing richness of events and experiences to showcase the depth and breadth of Indigenous art and culture.

"While Indigenous culture from around the world is celebrated, there is a particular focus is on sharing the traditional stories, cultures and spiritual knowledge of Australia's Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

"At the 2010 festival, more than 300 song men and women, custodians and performers expressed their language and culture through ceremony, music, dance, storytelling, weaving, painting and theatre with performances ranging from the traditional to the latest contemporary works."

Ms Bligh said funding for The Dreaming 2011 follows on from the recent announcement of $420 000 in arts sector funding over three years to the Queensland Folk Federation who present the annual Dreaming festival.

"The Queensland Folk Federation has worked hard to produce some of our state's most innovative arts experiences with The Dreaming joining the annual Woodford Folk Festival, now only a few weeks away, on the Federation's calendar of signature events.

The Dreaming will be presented in June 2011 at the QFF's 500-acre environmental parkland known as Woodfordia. For further information: http://www.thedreamingfestival.com/
