QUEENSLAND INDIGENOUS DOCUMENTARY RELIVES ORIGINAL ASHES TOUR

Premier and Minister for the Arts Anna Bligh today announced a Queensland-made documentary about the first indigenous cricket team to tour the UK will air on ABC this weekend.

"From the Ashes, produced by Brisbane-based, indigenous production company Carbon Media, follows two young Indigenous men to the United Kingdom as they travel in the footsteps of the indigenous touring cricket team of 1868," Ms Bligh said.

"The documentary received funding from my government through Screen Queensland, as part of their commitment to supporting Indigenous creative talent."

"As well as telling an important story from Australia's history, this production will also deliver important economic benefits for Queensland, creating flow on economic benefits of $270,000."

From the Ashes will air on ABC1 on Sunday 14 March at 1.30pm as part of ABC's Message Stick strand.

"From the Ashes takes viewers on a journey with the men, to experience their stories as they learn from the 1868 tour; balanced against the perspective of a modern touring cricket team," Ms Bligh said.

Screen Queensland CEO Maureen Barron said projects such as From the Ashes would continue to receive investment as part of Screen Queensland's new screen support programs.

"Our Indigenous program is designed to support the development of Queensland practitioners and help them to refine their skills to a level where they can create and produce their own projects," Ms Barron said.

"We want to assist in establishing a pool of skilled Indigenous screen practitioners based in Queensland. With the important work that Carbon Media does we believe this will become a reality."
