Queensland To Fight For Top Broadband Service - No Matter Who Wins Government

The Bligh Government will push for a state-of-the-art broadband service no matter which political party eventually takes office in Canberra, Queensland ITC Minister Robert Schwarten said today.

Mr Schwarten said there was no doubt the world-class National Broadband Network (NBN) was far better than Opposition Leader Tony Abbott's much more limited plan.

He said the Queensland Bush strongly supported the NBN and the Bligh Government looked to Member for Kennedy Bob Katter to tell Canberra what Queenslanders wanted.

"The Bligh Government will work with whoever forms government in Canberra to get the best high-speed broadband network for Queensland," Mr Schwarten said.

"We believe the best system for Queensland must be a system based on the maximum use of optical fibre," he said.

"Services for the Bush must be based on equity with the city and not on a profit motive."

Mr Schwarten said Independents Bob Katter, Rob Oakeshott and Tony Windsor had all said decent broadband services for the Bush were a central issue in their negotiations with Julia Gillard and Tony Abbott.

Tasmanian Independent Andrew Wilkie has said he wants Tasmania's NBN network completed.

Mr Schwarten said Queensland would look to Bob Katter to continue to work to get the best broadband deal for Queensland.

"I am sure Bob Katter will continue to express his views forcefully, no matter what type of government is chosen for this nation."

  1. First bit of good sense I have heard in ages from any government. Putting the economic growth of the country ahead of party politics and getting us up to speed with the rest of the modern world.
