Queenslanders honoured at domestic violence prevention awards
The outstanding efforts of six individuals and organisations in
raising awareness and preventing domestic and family violence has
been recognised at an awards ceremony on the Gold Coast
today.
Community Services Minister Karen Struthers congratulated each
winner at the Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Awards
2011.
"Today is White Ribbon Day-International Day for the Elimination
of Violence Against Women-and it is timely we recognise the
people who work to stamp out domestic and family violence and
support those affected," Ms Struthers said.
"Six awards and one highly commended certificate were presented
in six categories recognising both individuals and organisations
that have developed successful prevention or awareness
initiatives."
Winners include an innovative cricket competition held in
Charleville called Hit DV 4 6, which won awards in two
categories; ABC Southern Queensland presenter Belinda Sanders for
her work in raising awareness; and Mount Isa's Detective Senior
Sergeant Kelly Harvey for speaking out publicly about her own
family's domestic violence tragedy.
"All of our award winners and nominees have demonstrated how
individuals and communities can act as one against domestic and
family violence.
"They should feel very proud of their achievements."
Ms Struthers said the Bligh Government was committed to ending
violence against women, introducing new legislation to address
the serious problem.
"The Domestic and Family Violence Protection Bill 2011 represents
the first major overhaul of Queensland's domestic and family
violence legislation in 20 years," Ms Struthers said.
"The proposed bill includes changes such as the introduction of
police issued protection notices to help provide timely
protection for victims of domestic and family violence and hold
perpetrators immediately accountable for their actions.
Ms Struthers urged anyone experiencing dome stic or family
violence to seek assistance.
"Women can phone the DV Connect helpline 24 hours a day on 1800
811 811, while men needing help can phone the DV Connect Mensline
on 1800 600 636.
