Queenslanders join 1 million women to fight climate change
Climate Change and Sustainability Minister Kate Jones has congratulated Queensland women for taking the opportunity to sign up to the 1 million women campaign at last week's EKKA.
Ms Jones said 2,000 women made the pledge to join the effort during the royal show, demonstrating Queensland women want to make a difference in the fight against climate change.
"This nationwide campaign aims to recruit 1 million women, to work together to cut one million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions over the next two years," Ms Jones said.
"This is the equivalent of taking 250,000 cars off the road for 12 months.
"It's a bold ambition, but one that can make a real difference for our environment - and it was great to see so many woman keen to get on board at this year's EKKA.
"Every woman who joins the campaign takes a pledge to cut one tonne of carbon dioxide from their daily lives within a year of joining, by doing simple things such as conserving ener gy at home, reducing waste, buying local produce and taking public transport or riding a bike.
"Since the campaign was launched in July 2009, more than 6,100 Queensland women have joined and have collectively pledged climate savings equating to an amazing 12,200 kilograms of greenhouse reductions - approximately two tonnes per person.
"With the latest group of EKKA recruits now signed up, these savings will continue to rise, in a huge boost to our environment.
"This campaign is another step forward in reaching our Toward Q2 target of reducing Queensland households' carbon footprint by one-third by 2020.
"I know Queensland women can and will rise to this climate challenge.
"I encourage all women of the Parliament to join the Premier and I and sign up to the 1 Million Women campaign today."
