Red tape reduction milestone
Today’s release by the Newman Government of measures to
streamline the environmental impact statement (EIS) and social
impact assessment (SIA) processes for large resource projects has
been warmly welcomed by the Queensland Resources Council.
‘Today is an important milestone in the Newman Government’s regulatory reform journey to build Queensland’s global reputation as a leading resources jurisdiction,’ said QRC Chief Executive Michael Roche.
‘What we are seeing again from this government is a commitment to outcomes over process in the shared interests of industry, communities and the environment.
‘The introduction of risk-based, generic terms of reference for EIS processes is expected to translate into a significant reduction in unnecessary costs and delays to major resource projects.
‘The key rider is that they do not compromise on the regulation of activities determined as being moderate to high risk. This risk-based approach is helping to bring Queensland into line with other world leading resource jurisdictions.’
Mr Roche said congratulations were in order for Deputy Premier Jeff Seeney, Assistant Minister for Natural Resources and Mines, Lisa France, Coordinator-General, Barry Broe and the Departments of Environment and Heritage Protection and State Development, Infrastructure and Planning.
‘Minister France and Mr Broe deserve special mention for their personal commitment to driving this reform task.
‘They worked very closely with QRC members throughout every stage of the reform process with the end result being a world-class assessment process that will save time and money while ensuring scarce government resources stay focused on delivering better environmental and social outcomes,’ Mr Roche said.
