Report shows Queensland hospitals improving
The latest State of Our Public Hospitals Report 2007-08 has confirmed the Queensland Government's investment in health is paying dividends.
Deputy Premier and Health Minister Paul Lucas said the Report confirmed Queensland was continuing to improve hospital services.
"Our elective surgery waiting lists continue to be the shortest in the nation with a mean waiting period of 27 days compared to the national average of 34 days," Mr Lucas said.
"However, since this 2007-08 data was collated, we have made further inroads.
"Our latest quarterly report shows in the first three months of 2009 more than 29,600 patients received their elective surgery - that's a 10.3 per cent increase on the same quarter in 2008."
Mr Lucas said today's Report indicated Queensland's emergency department attendances were growing faster than any other State, despite also showing a marked improvement in emergency department wait times.
"Queensland is now ranked third, up from sixth the previous year - but I want Queensland to be first," he said.
"That is why we lobbied the Federal Government for extra funding to expand and improve emergency departments across the State.
"That is why we are delivering step down and rehabilitation beds to relieve pressure on our acute care beds.
"And that is why we have committed to delivering an additional 20,000 elective surgery operations over the next three years.
Mr Lucas said in 2007-08 Queensland provided more than nine million outpatient appointments.
"That's 22 per cent of the nation's 41 million outpatient appointments," he said.
"However own data tells us we need to do better and we will.
"Since 2005 we have employed more than 9,500 additional doctors and nurses, and Queensland's record $9 billion health budget has increased by more than 65 per cent.
"What this report shows is that our investment is making inroads," Mr Lucas said.
