RSPCA Qld confident that everything possible is being done to minimise oil spill impact on wildlife
18 March 2008 So far so good...
RSPCA Qld CEO Mark Townend says he is confident that everything possible is being done in the wake of the oil spill to minimise affects on wildlife.
Mr Townend and RSPCA Qld Chief Inspector Mick Pecic attended a debriefing of interested stakeholders this morning.
"I'm both relieved and delighted that all parties agree that the saving and treatment of wildlife is a priority," he said.
" To be honest, we initially expected the impact on native fauna to be enormous and we were concerned that the relevant authorities were not acting in the appropriate manner.
But now we have all been briefed on what exactly was being done on a ground level, we're confident that the correct measures were put in place.
"Affected animals are getting the care they need and so far the wildlife impact has been minimal.
"Obviously it's still early days but we're hopeful this will continue.
"Today's meeting has given us the opportunity to clarify how relevant information in relation to incidents such as this can be communicated more efficiently in the future, not just to the RSPCA, but to the media and the public."
Mr Townend says the RSPCA will continue to work closely with all interested stakeholders, including the Mayors of Moreton and the Sunshine Coast, to minimise the impact on wildlife and restore the region to its pristine condition.
RSPCA Qld has sent a team of wildlife officers and its Senior Ambulance Officer plus emergency equipment and a four wheel drive, to assist on Moreton Island.
Since the disaster unfolded the EPA has been referring all wildlife related calls to RSPCA Qld's 1300 ANIMAL telephone number.
RSPCA staff and volunteers have been collating information relating to injured wildlife and compiling a list of wildlife rescue volunteers who can be called upon if required.
