Scary competition closes this Friday

The countdown is on to the 2009 Queensland Home Garden Expo and organisers are now calling for final entries into this year's inaugural scarecrow competition in support of the Sunshine Coast Community Hospice. So get creative and get your winning design in before entries close this Friday, July 3.

The scarecrow was once one of the most familiar figures of the rural landscape, his rugged figure has been around for hundreds of years to guard against flocks of hungry birds and as part of this year's 25th anniversary celebrations, the Queensland Home Garden Expo is calling for entries for their inaugural Scarecrow Competition.

In association with the Nambour Garden Club, Expo organisers are inviting everyone from school and community groups to garden societies and individuals to take part in this year's competition to be in the running to win a number of cash prizes.

Marion Beazley, Queensland Home Garden Expo organiser, is thrilled about the celebrations taking place as part of this year's event and believes that this competition will add to the excitement and provide a great way for individuals and groups to get involved in the lead up to the event.

"We eagerly look forward to seeing what people will come up with and envisage that the field of scarecrow's display, which will feature the dozens of scarecrows designs, will be nothing short of impressive," said Marion.

"We encourage school groups and individuals to put on their thinking caps and use their imagination to come up with a winning design. It's a great way to get involved and potentially raise funds for your activities or just a good school holiday project that the whole family can get involved in."

All group entries will receive two free tickets to the Expo and each individual entry will receive one free ticket to the event.

Entries must be submitted no later than Friday, July 3 and all scarecrows must be delivered to the Nambour Showgrounds, Coronation Avenue, Nambour on Wednesday July 8. Judging will take place on the Expo opening day, Friday, July 10.
