Spotlight shines on talented artists who have the 'IT' factor
Talents of young Indigenous Queenslanders were showcased last
night at the Aboriginal Centre for Performing Arts graduation in
Brisbane.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships Minister
Desley Boyle awarded more than 40 graduates with their
certificates - but not before a night full of acting, singing,
dancing and music.
"These performers have the IT factor," Ms Boyle said.
"It was a pleasure to be part of the show and to have the
opportunity to enjoy their performances, from music and slow
dance to soul and some musical theatre," she said.
"The centre and its talented team including Leah Purcell should
take a bow for instilling in these performers a hunger to share
their cultural interpretation and skill - these artists are ones
to watch.
"This is an inspirational centre of excellence and innovation for
Australian Indigenous performing artists, with the school
committed to developing world-class performers and art workers wh
o embrace culture and contribute to Australia's cultural
identity."
The students undergo training in acting, dance, singing and
music, supported by classes in arts administration, well being
and business training.
"I congratulate all of the graduating students on their
outstanding achievements and I wish them luck with their future
endeavours - I am sure we will be hearing and seeing more of you
in the years ahead."
The Aboriginal Centre for Performing Arts is a Queensland
Government owned training organisation for talented young
Indigenous people and artists.
"The centre provides a nurturing environment which celebrates
artistic excellence in contemporary performing arts practice and
training and it strengthens the voice of the next generation of
Indigenous performing artists and arts workers," said the
Minister.
"It is dedicated to the development of the Indigenous performing
artist, providing the essential skills, expertise and prac tical
experience to succeed in the mainstream performing arts
industry.
"As a reflection of ACPA's achievements, its students have
performed at a number of public events this year, including the
launch of the Preamble to the Queensland Constitution at
Parliament House and NAIDOC Week festivities."
