State Awards Outstanding Graduates with Scholarships of up to $10,000
Minister for Education and Training
The Honourable Geoff Wilson
10/03/2010
STATE AWARDS OUTSTANDING GRADUATES WITH SCHOLARSHIPS OF UP TO $10,000
Fifteen high-achieving graduates from Queensland's class of 2009 were today awarded with university study scholarships of between $1000 and $10,000 at the TJ Ryan Memorial Medals and Scholarships ceremony at Parliament House in Brisbane.
Education and Training Minister Geoff Wilson congratulated the 10 TJ Ryan Memorial medallists and five highly commended students on their academic excellence and exceptional leadership in their schools and communities.
"The medallists will receive $2000 in scholarship payments for each year they complete of a degree course, to a maximum of five years," Mr Wilson said.
"The highly commended students will receive $1000 to help them with their tertiary studies."
Mr Wilson said the Bligh Government has awarded outstanding students from state and non-state schools with this prestigious award since 1927.
"Thomas Joseph Ryan, a former teacher and lawyer and Queensland Premier from 1915-1919, died from pneumonia in 1921, aged 45," he said.
"These awards, named in his honour, recognise his dedication to public life.
"Like Ryan, the students we honour today have excelled academically and, in many cases, on the sporting field too - but they also share other notable traits.
"They are inspirational leaders and role models to their friends and fellow students and in their local communities.
"They have found time in their busy schedules to participate in activities outside school, in sports, charity and church work, and representing youth on local councils and other organisations.
Mr Wilson said the Bligh Government is inviting all Queenslanders to share their ideas on what would make a difference to their child's education through the Flying Start for Queensland Children discussion paper.
"This paper outlines proposals that will shape the future of education in Queensland," he said.
"I encourage you to give your feedback via the Government's website or by email, fax or post. Public consultation forums are also being held until June 30."
