Strategies for Gifted Children - 'A Rising Tide To Lift All Ships'
Minister for Education and Training
The Honourable Geoff Wilson

STRATEGIES FOR GIFTED CHILDREN - 'A RISING TIDE TO LIFT ALL SHIPS'
All Queensland students could benefit from exciting gifted education strategies to be discussed at a state conference this weekend.
Education and Training Minister Geoff Wilson today officially opened the two-day 18th Annual State Conference of the Queensland Association for Gifted and Talented Children.
"The conference theme 'Sigma Gifted: a rising tide that lifts all ships' will promote the principle that gifted education strategies will be of benefit to all students," Mr Wilson said.
"The focus of this conference is on promoting and sharing exciting, challenging curriculum and pedagogy originating in the gifted field which can be applied to all learning environments to lift the achievement levels of all students."
Mr Wilson said traditionally only five per cent of students were thought to be gifted and talented because these students could perform on cue.
"But this could be the tip of the iceberg with Professor Francoys Gagne's research suggesting that many gifted students could be underperforming and were not being identified," Mr Wilson said.
"Gagne suggests that the percentage of gifted students showing outstanding natural ability or aptitude in any domain of human ability could be at least 10 to 15 per cent.
"The Bligh Government is well aware of the need to support these children and we've provided funding to help give teachers the capacity to identify and engage them.
"A world where future sustainability, economic achievement and social harmony requires creative and innovate solutions will benefit greatly by fostering the abilities of these young people.
"These young gifted people need to feel valued in a learning environment that challenges and supports them to pursue excellence and develop a passion for life-long learning."
Mr Wilson said the Department's Framework for Gifted Education was also helping to provide world class education and training by helping staff understand and support gifted children.
