Tiwi Pearl: Kate 'missed it by that much'

17 March, 2010 Tiwi Pearl: Kate 'missed it by that much'

The Minister for Sustainability, Kate Jones, yesterday admitted under pressure that the Tiwi Pearl had been discovered a whole 50 metres from its intended resting place on Harry Atkinson reef, ending her pretense that she successfully sunk the boat.

LNP Member for Cleveland, Mark Robinson said, "Maritime Safety Queensland confirmed the minister's blunder when it issued the exact coordinates of the Tiwi Pearl, not at latitude 27 24.505' S as the minister had planned, but 27 24.532' S. The MSQ mariners report is conclusive that the minister 'missed it by that much'. "

Dr Robinson said, "The minister's claim that the project was successful is laughable.

"First, it was a small contribution, not a whole reef. Very few boats will be able to fish on it at once.

"Second, she ignored strong wind warnings and sent the boat into the storm to avoid angry boaties and fishers.

"Third, the anchor ropes predictably snapped and the boat was out of control.

"Fourth, the boat's resting position on the bottom was not known for days (the minister now admits she didn't know until Monday)

"Fifth, the boat came to rest 50 metres from its correct position and with the wrong orientation.

Dr Robinson said, "the minister was definitely not in 'control', left everything in 'kaos' and has a lot of work to do to 'Get Smart' about Moreton Bay.

"The minister also reveals the extreme Green magic science that she believes in, when she states that already fish were making the Tiwi Pearl home.

"Suddenly its as if there are schools of fish everywhere around the Pearl. Its as if the boat was 'surrounded by an entire school of tuna'. Anglers would find that hard to believe minister . 'How about a few angry flathead' would also receive suspicion from boaties.

"Boaties and fishers are angry about the botched sinking, and hope that the minister will handle other artificial reef deployments better than the Tiwi Pearl."
