Trial of school zones on multi-lane roads
Eight schools throughout the state are taking part in a 12-month trial to test the effectiveness of school zones on multi-lane roads, Transport Minister Rachel Nolan announced in State Parliament today.
The trial will also test the performance of different types of signage to slow motorists down.
The trial will be conducted at:
*South-east Queensland- Carina State School, Mt Maria Junior College (Enoggera), St Ita's Catholic Primary (Dutton Park), Bundamba State School, and Taigum State School
*Cairns - Balaclava State School, and Mother of Good Counsel
*Townsville - Weir State School
Ms Nolan said children needed to be protected through active road safety measures to ensure that they get to and from school safely.
Currently, school zones are not permitted on multi-lane arterial roads. Generally, pedestrian signals are provided to enable children to cross safely.
"An evaluation to test the effectiveness of school zones and signs on these types of roads has not been carried out previously," Ms Nolan said.
"This trial will assess motorists' compliance against the different signage options to see which types of school zone signage works best on these roads."
Some of the different signage tested in the trial will include standard school zone signs, flashing school zone signs, variable speed limit signs and vehicle activated speed limit signs.
Depending on the outcome of the trial, the guidelines for installing school zones on multi-lane roads in Queensland, the 'School Environment Safety Guidelines', will be reviewed.
The School Environment Safety Guidelines aim to reduce the number of school transport related crashes by providing school communities with school road programs and technical infrastructure options which guide road environment upgrades.
The guidelines are available from www.tmr.qld.gov.au.
Ms Nolan encouraged all motorists to be vigilant around schools to help keep students safe.
