Uncertainty Over Transport Project While Labor Is In Charge
ALTHOUGH welcome, the announcement that the Bligh Labor
Government's Coast Connect project has been delayed will add
further uncertainty to the residents and business owners along
Nicklin Way and Main Drive.
Member for Kawana Jarrod Bleijie said that further uncertainty
over the project is the last thing that business owners needed
right now. This project is already costing business money.
Last year Mr Bleijie held two community forums to discuss the
project with affected locals.
"People want to know what is happening one way or the other,
rather than being strung along by a Labor Government that makes
policy decisions on the run," Mr Bleijie said.
"There are vacant commercial properties with 'for lease' signs up
and down Nicklin Way because people will not sign a commercial
lease for a site that may be affected by the Coast Connect
project.
"It's a simple as that.
"I have spoken to several business owners who tell me that the
reason they can't find a new tenant is due to the uncertainty
over this project.
"Business owners want both short-term and long-term security when
they are signing a lease.
"Major infrastructure projects and residential developments will
see Kawana become the growth hub of the Coast over the next
decade.
"Planning for future services needs to happen now.
"The Sunshine Coast needs a business case on public
transport.
"On one hand the state wants to put bus lanes along the Nicklin
Way and Council are campaigning for light rail down Nicklin Way,
yet the state owns the land on the CAMCOS corridor.
"In past community forums on this issue, residents have
overwhelmingly supported the scrapping of the Coast Connect
project.
"The Governments latest delay should be the final nail in the
coffin for the Coast Connect project," Mr Bleijie said.
