Update on Oil Spill

23 March 2009 Update on Oil Spill

I would like to thank all of you who rang or emailed wanting to volunteer with the oil spill. It is great to the community willingness to help out when urgent action is required. Unfortunately, volunteers were not able to participate in the actual clean up due to OH&S restrictions. Council however must be commended on their swift action and deployment of forces. Most of the oil has now been removed and we now move into the rehabilitation phase of the spill.

Sometime soon, Maritime Safety is expected to hand over the reins to the Environmental Protection Agency. When this occurs, volunteers will be able to help out. A monitoring plan is being developed to access the impact of the oil. This may include monitoring fauna in the intertidal zone, mangroves, rocky foreshores and the like. The results of the monitoring need to be able to stand up in a court of law, so UQ and USQ are helping writing the plan. Time is going to be of the essence and due to the large area to cover volunteers will be crucial in the monitoring.

I will keep you posted with new developments as they arise.
