Volunteer community NRM groups to share in funding
Volunteer natural resource management (NRM) groups across
Queensland will share in more than $100 000 to promote greater
awareness of environmental protection.
Nineteen volunteer NRM groups were successful under the latest
round of the Natural Resources Awareness Grants.
Minister for Natural Resources Rachel Nolan said the grants were
designed to assist volunteer NRM groups protect, repair and
restore their local environments.
"The successful applicants range from a catchment coordinating
committee in Brisbane's south to a traditional owner group in Far
North Queensland's Kuranda," Ms Nolan said.
"Since 2004, the grants have funded a diverse range of projects
including film competitions, digital murals and water-saving
initiatives.
"NRM groups have created multimedia awareness products and
developed Learnscapes -a hands-on learning experience teaching
landcare from an Indigenous perspective.
"The applications were assessed on the prospective projects'
ability to form collaborative community partnerships, meeting
this year's theme of 'Building Resilient Landscapes' and the
ability to raise community awareness of natural resource
management.
"Each of the 19 volunteer NRM groups is devoted to protecting and
rehabilitating their local environment and I congratulate them
all on receiving this funding."
Grants of up to $5,000 were available for individual group
projects, and up to $10,000 for projects involving two or more
groups.
The State Government will continue its support of the volunteer
NRM sector by this year contributing $300,000 to the Queensland
Water and Landcarers Association who promote the work of NRM
volunteers and ensure appropriate insurance protections are in
place.
