Where are Maroochy River's Booms?

13 March 2009 Where are Maroochy River's Booms?

Promises Promises. After waiting all day to see a boom go across the Maroochy River to stop any more oil from entering the system, I got in the boat to find one because I couldn't see one in any obvious place eg the mouth, the bridge etc . Where was it put? Across Cornmeal Creek. Yeh, let's protect Sunshine Plaza and basically a rock lined drain. Another boom was placed at Maroochy Waterwater. Yeh, let's protect a canal estate as well. See photo.

These two booms are now being removed. I don't really care as they are not protecting anything valuable, but I understand the reason for removing them by MSQ is that they pose a risk to boating traffic!

What about the MANGROVES in the river!

There is still several slicks floating around the river. The slicks look like foam but contain the suspended oil particles. See photos.

Also, I came across a significant area of mangroves at the end of Nojoor Rd with the mud covered in oil. There is a bobcat removing mud. When asked what he was doing, the bobcat operator would not tell me and was quite nasty. This type of clean up should be done by hand as mangroves are extremely sensitive. Volunteers would be more than happy to help out. I am awaiting Maritime Safety's response.
