Why have States...?
04 November 2009 Why have States...?
With the Prime Minister announcing this week that the Federal Government is seeking to take a more active part in the management of our cities and regions then the question is 'why have states?' and what will be the role of local governments like the Sunshine Coast Regional Council.
Given the importance of this issue we will be having a hypothetical on 'Strengthening the region: The case for No States!' with key decision makers from education, business, banking, tourism and government sectors.
Panel facilitator Professor Scott Prasser says:
"Many people think that States have become irrelevant and have failed to provide the planning, infrastructure and support for urban areas like the Sunshine Coast. In Queensland too many funds have been used to grow an increasing State public bureaucracy whose wage increases and benefits have outstripped the private sector - more than most other states.
The other problem of having three levels of government is that too many issues go through the 'pass the parcel' process - no-one wants to take the responsibility for problems and both citizens and business just do not know whom to approach about what anymore.
Many people in the community are tired of the layers of red tape that make it hard to get simple projects off the ground, add to costs and make it difficult to get action on the important issues facing our growing region."
