Young Musician Set To Carry On Legacy Of The Late Billy Thorpe

Premier and Arts Minister Anna Bligh today announced 18-year-old Andrew Redford of Maroochydore as the winner of the $10,000 Billy Thorpe Scholarship for 2010.

"Andrew Redford is a multi-instrumental singer/songwriter from the Sunshine Coast who is just coming into his own," the Premier said.

"He released his debut album earlier this year, performed at the Woodford Folk Festival and his songs have made it into the finals of last year's Q Song awards.

"Each year the Billy Thorpe Scholarship, established by in 2007 by the Queensland Government, assists an emerging Queensland-based musician by providing career guidance, a recording opportunity and a cash prize," Ms Bligh said.

"Andrew Redford impressed the judging panel with his great potential as a songwriter and his proven track record in establishing himself as an emerging artist.

"Andrew will use the opportunities afforded to him with this scholarship to produce his second album."

Ms Bligh said Queensland's industry peak body Q Music coordinated this year's scholarship as part of the annual Q Song awards, taking place Tuesday 10 August.

"Andrew is receiving his award alongside Queensland's top songwriters," Ms Bligh said.

"Q Song is a search for the state's top songwriters in categories such as rock, pop, jazz, blues and roots, folk/ballad, world, punk, Indigenous, hip-hop, alternative and many more with a prize pool of $35,000.

Ms Bligh said Billy Thorpe spent his formative years in Queensland and made a significant contribution to the music industry over five decades of performing, writing and producing.

"My government provides major support to Queensland's contemporary music scene through this scholarship, the Grant McLennan Memorial Fellowship which was awarded to Danny Widdicombe and Andrew Morris, and through events such as the annual BIG SOUND conference in Brisbane which draws top industry executives from around the world," Ms Bligh said.
