Free internet safety training sessions
Protect your computer from internet crime
Sunshine Coast libraries are holding free internet safety training
sessions throughout January so residents can learn how to protect their
computers from cyber crime.
At the sessions, residents will learn about cyber bullying, identity
theft, scams, computer protection and protecting a wireless connection
from unauthorised users.
Ross Duncan, Manager Learning Communities said internet-based crime,
fraud and bullying was on the increase and parents play a critical role
helping their children to have safe, positive experiences online.
"With increasing use of the internet, particularly by young people, internet safety is becoming an issue," said Mr Duncan.
"Children may---unwittingly or deliberately---share personal information
without realising the risk of identity theft, or leave online content
that is not in their best interests.
"While teenagers might be caught out by the commercial side of the
internet---through advertising, scams or through sharing downloads of
music or television programs.
"Parents, who are aware how and why children and young people use the
internet, with strategies in place to manage the risks, can greatly
increase the safety of their children and families.
"These sessions will be of interest to anyone who has a home computer."
The new smartphones and online games such as World of Warcraft will also be covered.
