free Sports Locker Room workshop

Date: Thursday 14th October 2010
Location: The Pavilion, Gympie

Gympie sports workshop provides practical tips at grass roots

The Gympie sports community is being encouraged to tap into a wealth of knowledge and expertise at the upcoming Bligh Government's free Sports Locker Room workshop on Thursday, 14 October.

Sport Minister Phil Reeves said the free workshop was geared towards local athletes, coaches, clubs, and sports participants.

"The forum will provide participants with useful tips and information on sporting related topics for people working at the grassroots level," Mr Reeves said.

"There will be presentations from sports psychologist Dr Phil Jauncey, exercise physiologist and lecturer Chris Weier, and former Paralympian and biomechanics expert Brendan Burkett.

"Topics covered in the forum will focus on strength and conditioning, high performance techniques and the future of biomechanics in sport.

"It also provides the sporting community with an opportunity to exchange ideas with professionals."

Mr Reeves said the Sports Locker Room Workshops have been a hit with the sporting community.

"Since 2001 more than 255 Sports Locker Room forums have been held across the state, attended by more than 13,000 Queenslanders from Coolangatta to the Torres Strait," Mr Reeves said.

"These workshops highlight the Bligh Government's commitment to developing more sport and recreation opportunities for everyone.

"Encouraging people to boost their physical activity and live a healthy active lifestyle will help us work towards our Toward Q2: Tomorrow's Queensland goal of making Queenslanders Australia's healthiest people.

"Our aim is to cut obesity levels by one third by 2020."

The Gympie Sports Locker Room will be held at The Pavilion, Exhibition Road, Gympie from 6.30 to 8.30pm, Thursday 14 October.
