Free worm farm and composting workshop
Don't miss the 'Wriggles' live in Beerwah
National Recycling Week, 7 -- 14 November 09
Sunshine Coast Council will kick start National Recycling Week with a
free worm farm and composting workshop at the Beerwah Resource Recovery
Centre, this Saturday 7 November from 9.30am.
The Beerwah session is the first in a series of workshops that will
present an easy 'how to' guide to setting up a worm farm or composting
system.
Places are still available and a worm farm and composting bin will be given away at each session.
Waste manager Wayne Schafer said that composting and worm farming is so
easy, cost effective, and a great way to get the whole family involved
in reducing household greenhouse gas emissions.
"Residents will learn how to set up their own worm farm or compost bin
at home, what should go in and what should be left out," Mr Schafer
said.
"Kitchen scraps and garden waste can account for up to 37 per cent of domestic rubbish.
"To help reduce the amount of waste going to landfill, these workshops are one way of helping the community do their part.
"Queensland is one of Australia's biggest waste generators and
composting is something everyone can do to help the environment,"
"Council sells compost bins at a discounted price or you can make your
own from things you already have lying around. Even without a garden,
you can still keep a worm farm on a patio or deck, they don't smell,
don't take up much room and the worm castings will do wonders for your
pot plants," Mr Schafer said.
Council will host one or two workshops per month covering all divisions
across the Coast. For more information, locations and times, log onto
the events calendar on council's website www.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au
Workshops are free, but bookings are essential. To book your place, call council's customer service centre on 5475 7272.
