National Nude Food Day
Take it all off-go nude
Dress down your lunchbox, forget the foil and get rid of the
wrap---Wednesday 13 October is National Nude Food Day and council is
encouraging Coast residents to get involved.
To take part in the day, which aims to reduce waste to landfill and
improve nutrition, simply prepare a healthy, package free lunch with no
ties, bags or plastic wrap.
Environment Portfolio holder Cr Keryn Jones said that the Sunshine Coast
Council has been promoting litter free lunches in schools for some
time, but this national day is a great way to bring everyone together
and really make a difference.
"Although Nude Food Day is primarily focused on engaging primary school
children, it's a great way for everyone to minimise their waste and
think about what they're eating," Cr Jones said
"Australians typically produce around 2.25 kilograms of waste per person
per day---I think we would all be surprised at the amount packaging we
use per household.
"We all know we need to reduce, re-use, recycle, but it's the first step in this message, reduce, that often gets overlooked.
"This campaign offers a practical and easy way to achieve that first step and reduce the amount of waste we create.
"My family practice nude food all the time, by packing lunches in
re-useable containers. I know it is saving me money too, when I walk
straight past the wrap and foil section at the supermarket every week."
Council's environment education officer Sandie Johnston said it was great to see so many schools signed up for the day.
"We're fortunate in the way schools across the Coast have embraced
council's waste education program---when I approached teachers about Nude
Food Day, they jumped at the chance," Ms Johnston said.
"Education doesn't stop at school though, so we're really encouraging anyone who prepares a packed lunch to take part.
"One day won't make a drastic change to the amount of landfill we
produce on the Coast, but if everyone who takes part continues to go
nude, that really will make a difference."
National Nude Food Day is a nationally recognised day in which
Australians can come together and rally their support behind healthy
eating and waste reduction.
Nude Food Day was developed in response to the increasing concern
surrounding two of the nation's most critical issues: the importance of
good nutrition for optimal health, and assigning a greater commitment to
minimising our environmental footprint.
