Petrie Creek Catchment Care Group - Clean Up Australia Day
Time To Clean Up Your Act
It's that time of year again, time to don on a set of cleaning gloves,
muster up your family and friends and give a little back to the local
environment.
On Sunday the 7th of March it's Clean Up Australia Day. The Petrie
Creek Catchment Care Group is organising a clean-up site along the
banks of Petrie Creek beginning at Quota Park in Nambour at 10am till
12noon.
Cerran Fawns, Manager of the Petrie Creek Catchment Care Group says,
"Whether you have participated in Clean Up Australia Day before or not,
it's a great opportunity to have some fun, meet fellow community
members, and positively contribute to the community."
Volunteers will be supplied with cleanup bags and gloves.
The recent rains have deposited all sorts of rubbish into the creek.
Ms Fawns added, "I have noticed a mattress near Coles and the usual
assortment of cans, bottles, plastic bags and fast food wrappers. It
is evident that some people view the creek as a wash away rubbish tip,
they just don't realise the effect that rubbish can have, on not only
the local wildlife but also the river system."
Plastic bags are one of the most harmful pieces of rubbish. They get
washed into the Maroochy River and ocean and turtles think they are
jelly fish and eat them. The bags do not pass through their digestive
system and they end up starving to death.
The Petrie Creek Catchment Care Group envisions Petrie Creek to be a
stable, self repairing and self sustaining natural resource to be
enjoyed by the future generations. This vision will only become a
reality with the help of local community members and businesses.
"I encourage all members of the community to choose to get involved
with events such as Clean Up Australia Day and to be mindful of their
actions especially toward the local environment and the catchment", Ms
Fawns added.
Participants will need to bring a hat, closed in shoes, sunscreen and
water. There will be a sausage sizzle at the end of the day for all
those who helped out. Phone 5476 4777 to RSVP.
