Sunshine Coast Art Prize News...
4 February 2010 Sunshine Coast Art Prize launched for its 5th year
Nation-wide entries are now being sought for the Sunshine Coast Council Art Prize, with entries closing on 31 March.
Community Programs Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said this is one of the richest art prizes in Australia.
"Now in its fifth year, the art prize has achieved national acclaim for
its representation of contemporary Australian art," she said
The winner would be exhibited at the acclaimed Caloundra Regional Art Gallery.
"This year the winner will receive $15,000 cash and a four-week Hinterland residency prize," she said.
"The residency offers the Sunshine Coast community an opportunity to gain an insight into this artist's work," said Cr McKay.
Council's Heritage and Collections Manager John Waldron said this
award, for a two-dimensional art work, has consistently attracted a
dynamic range of media and artists. Past winners included Shane
Pickett, Tony Albert, Scott Redford and Peter Hudson.
"Every year the artists who participate are of an extremely high
standard, whether they are younger emerging artists or more established
professionals," said Mr Waldron.
As with previous years, 40 finalists will be selected to exhibit. This
year the award will be judged by national art critic and writer John
McDonald.
John Waldron said that John McDonald is renowned for his strong views
on contemporary Australian art and his decision for this year's prize
will be keenly watched.
A $25 entry fee applies. To apply online or for more details go to www.scap.org.au.
