Sustainable House Day

Date: Sunday 12th September 2010
Location: 38 Creekside Drive, Sippy Downs

Sippy Down's 'green home' opens its door on Sustainable House Day

Sunday, 12 September, is Sustainable House Day when some of the Coast's environmentally friendly homes will be open for visitors to see how to put being green into practice around the home.

2010 Glossie Award Stars, the Buildmore Group, will open their door at 38 Creekside Drive, Sippy Downs, to showcase sustainability and innovation in action.

Council's Project Manager of Environment Initiatives Ben McMullen said that is a great chance to see how it's done and be inspired with innovation and green living Sunshine Coast style.

"These builders have embraced renewable energy, recycling and other practices designed to lessen our impact on the environment," Mr McMullen said.

"The Buildmore Women into Building Housing Showcase at Sippy Downs has an open plan living area and features a solar power system which reduces energy usage to zero.

"One of the core intentions of this property is to educate the community and budding builders alike on the benefits of sustainable building design and how easy it is to achieve.

"Whether you are interested in retrofitting, designing or simply finding some local inspiration---this is a fabulous learning opportunity to find out about reducing waste around your home, saving water, natural home heating and cooling, and more."

The following sustainable homes will be open for viewing from 10am--4pm:
*    Robert and Robyn Stynes, 35 Crosby Hill Road, Buderim
*    The Buildmore "Women into Building Housing Showcase", 38 Creekside Drive, Sippy Downs
*    The Blue House, at the Yandina Community Gardens, 41 Farrell Street, Yandina.

The Blue House and the Yandina Community Gardens will also host some demonstration workshops on aquaponics systems, utilising different building mediums such as straw bale, and growing tropical food gardens.

Visit council's website for further listings including other sustainable display homes in Peregian Springs and Nambour.
