Athletics warms up with winter meets

The University of the Sunshine Coast Athletics Club mini meets program starts on Sunday, June 27, with a competition to be held fortnightly.

The program includes both track and field and will be held every second Sunday with registration at 1.30pm at the University of the Sunshine Coast tartan track at Sippy Downs Drive. Non-members cost is $8, members $4.

Club president Bryce Phillips said all athletes from the Sunshine Coast and beyond were welcome to compete.

He said under 12 competitors from little athletics clubs were also able to compete.

“The mini-meet program is popular for athletes wanting to chart their personal bests or for more serious activities like tuning up for state and national titles,” Mr Phillips said.

The club’s annual winter carnival will be on Sunday, August 8, with medals awarded to all place getters. Age groups operate for males and females from under 8 to Under 18, open and masters.  

The club’s state-of-the-art electronic timing system and will be in use. This timing system clocks to 1000th of a second and has Olympic recognition.
