Tony Ward explores Sport in Australian National Identity
Sport plays a big role in Australian life -- many even claim it is a
key part of the national psyche, but is sport really a much bigger deal
in Australia than elsewhere? Is it vital in national identity? And has
this importance changed over time?
Come along to the Noosa Library on Tuesday 12 October from 4.30 to 6pm
to hear author Tony Ward discuss how he threads these themes together in
his new book Sport in Australian National Identity: Kicking Goals.
In an entertaining and informative look at Australian's national
passion, in his talk "Fatso the wombat, the 12th Man, and the Aussie
passion for sports" Tony will cover the complex, differing views on
sport.
While some welcome the spirit of fair play and healthy enthusiasm.
Others decry 'win at all costs' attitudes, the commercialism of modern
sport, and one-eyed crowds. Still others, including Fatso the wombat
and the 12th Man, see it as a rich target for sending it up.
Attendance is free, however bookings are essential. Contact the Noosa Library on 5442 4411.
