Valuing Queensland's regional art collections presentation
Caloundra Regional Gallery will host a special presentation on
Queensland's historic Twelve Degrees of Latitude exhibition on Thursday
14 October.
Currently on display at the gallery, Twelve Degrees of Latitude:
Regional Gallery and University Art Collections in Queensland is a
landmark exhibition celebrating the strength of Queensland's regional
gallery culture in the state's 150th year and beyond.
Rebekah Butler, Executive Director of Museum and Gallery Services
Queensland (M&GSQ) and Brett Adlington, Co-Curator of Twelve Degrees
of Latitude will deliver the informative talk. They will discuss the
social relevance and histories of exhibits in the Twelve Degrees of
Latitude collection, how and why Queensland's regional collections began
and the role of patronage and donor support.
Participants will be given a tour of the exhibits and have the opportunity to question the presenters.
The presentation will help build awareness of the diversity and value of
the collections ahead of the development of a Collections Policy for
the Sunshine Coast Council. This new policy will provide a framework to
guide the development and management of collections and ensure that they
are interesting, relevant and accessible.
The collections of the Sunshine Coast can be discovered in archives,
galleries, libraries, museums, historical societies, keeping places,
public open spaces, botanical gardens and online. These collections
contain objects and information that can inspire and delight with
material that is central to understanding the culture and character of
the community and can help shape the identity.
In addition to the Twelve Degrees of Latitude exhibition currently
showing, a showcase program of the public and private collections of the
Sunshine Coast Council can also be viewed at:
* Noosa Regional Gallery exhibition Sunshine Coast Art Collection
* Butter Factory Arts Centre (Cooroy) exhibition Up the Coast.
