Division 5 Councillor Jenny McKay will join with a large group of supporters to spend Saturday night in swags and blankets in the Nambour Council Building forecourt, after a tinned spaghetti or baked bean dinner.

The night out in the cold, which includes a 20km walk from Nambour to Palmwoods and back is part of the Walk for the Homeless campaign which highlights the plight of local homeless.

The campaign will raise money for The Shack Community Centre in Nambour which provides food and emergency accommodation for the homeless

Cr McKay said funds raised from the walk's $15 registration fee will be used to assist the Shack's referal to appropriate emergency accommodation.

"The building now has a new roof and ceiling thanks to the work of volunteers and community contributions after part of the structure collapsed earlier this year ," Cr McKay said

"However, there is still so much we can all do to help reduce the number of homeless people on our streets -- one being by showing our support of initiatives which highlight this issue.

"The Coast traditionally has double the average number of homeless as the rest of Queensland.  On any given night we could have up to 3,000 people living on our streets.

"I encourage the community to take a walk in the shoes of a homeless person by joining myself and all the terrific people who want to support The Shack, on the walk and sleepout on Saturday."

"We want as many people as possible to take part or donate to help support community efforts to reduce the number of homeless in Nambour."

The walk starts from 9am on Saturday from the Shack in Price Street.
