Local Film Society ready for a big third year

The Noosa Hinterland's only community Film society -- Cinema Pomona Inc- is gearing up for its third year of quality world movies.

As has become its tradition the new season will open - at 3pm on Sunday 6th September - with a double feature, free champagne and a light meal.

The opening films are two very different views of Liverpool UK by the same director -Terence Davies.

"Distant Voices, Still Lives" - made in 1989 and re-released in 2008 - is an autobiography of the Davies family and working class life. It is considered one of the most haunting "musicals "of modern cinema.

"Of time and the city - a love song and a eulogy" premiered at Cannes this year.

Davies wears his heart on his sleeve in this highly personal absorbing and sublime film which has won accolades worldwide. Time Out London in its review called it...." a poetic masterpiece...magical from start to finish...audacious, original and exhilarating..."

Hence Cinema Pomona members are in for a double treat to start their new year!

Membership is open to all and there is no waiting list to join! You can join at the door prior to any screening; via the website; or send in a membership form .

Annual membership is available for $90.00 ( $50.00 concession), which is great value for 26 films!

In response to a membership survey, we are now also offering a "10 film deal". For only $50.00 ($40.00 concession) the member can attend any 10 films in 12 months, thus giving flexibility and choice.

The 2009/10 programme promises to be as exciting ,entertaining and different as in previous years.

Covering all genres, most of the films have been shown at major film festivals during the last 18 months.

They include "Tulpan"- a Mongolian comedy; "War dance" - a Ugandan dance competition; "Sita Sings the Blues" - animated Hindu mythology set to 1920s blues music; "Gomorrah" Italian drama; "You the Living" - quirky Swedish comedy; and "The Visitor"- USA drama . In addition there are 3 classics- including a Bergmann comedy!- and 2 nights of short films.

The Film Society shows a film each fortnight, on Sunday evenings, at The Majestic Theatre in Pomona. Members appreciate the uniqueness of The Majestic, and have adapted by bringing body warmers and having a cuppa during the film!

Films start promptly at 7pm, so members can gather before and also after the film to chat; have a drink; or even a meal at one of the local cafes .

We have had up to 250 members - mainly from the Pomona ,Cooran and Cooroy areas, but also from as far as Caloundra and Gympie. The Society expects that with the great 12 month programme and the new 10 film deal , members both past and present will renew and join the throng of excited new members!
